Sleeve Notes

Edinburgh is the home town of The McCalmans. To hear them on CD or tape is not the real thing but this recording comes closer than most. The Macs, more than any other band, should be seen and heard live. Maybe the spontaneous humour has something to do with it but the main reason is... the singing! They sing differently in front of an audience. They perform to an audience.

Summer is a good season for The McCalmans, July in the Scottish Highlands and Islands, August at the Edinburgh-Festival and September in their beloved Denmark, which is why you can't wipe the smiles off their voices. This album catches them at The Acoustic Music Centre, Edinburgh as part of the Festival Fringe. They were recorded over two Edinburgh Festivals, 1994 and 1995 with an audience which is a combination of home crowd, foreign fans and let's get out of the rain, this looks OK tourists. At no time was the audience told that the concerts were being recorded and so there was no fake audience support. All the tracks were recorded in Edinburgh on 16-track digital equipment and later mixed and edited in Edinburgh during August '95. They were good gigs. If you were there... you know. If you weren't there... where were you?
