Planxty - Dónal Lunny, Andy Irvine, Liam O'Flynn and Christy Moore play the soundtrack to my life. The Cliffs, The West Coast, The Blacksmith, Raggle Taggle Gypsy, Little Musgrave, Si Bhea'g Si Mhor, Tabhair Dom Do Lamh - songs and tunes like these have marked out my life.
When I saw Planxty first in Cork's City Hall in 1973 my ears were opened and I really heard music for the first time. It was a question of recognition, they were giving us back our music. Many names were mentioned; Willie Clancy, John Reilly, Ewan McColl, Seamus Ennis, Woody Guthrie.
I knew then that Planxty were vital links in the chain of transmission of our music taking us back and driving us forward. Their songs and tunes span generations, centuries even, but uniquely it is still new and relevant. As Dónal Lunny says "build it right and it will last" - they did. Planxty speak from the heart, they are vital, their work is the thing, they sing and play for us all - listen, hear.
